Memory Lane @ Dempsey Hill

2007083015sCoincidentally while writing on the Dempsey post, this group of friends suggested for a meet up cos it has been mths since we last met. And of course Dempsey Hill was my choice of venue and everyone agreed to that cos they missed the place too : )

When the day finally came, only 3 of us managed to fork out the time for the dinner. As Dempsey is rather inaccessible and far to those working in the eastern area, we arranged to meet at the ICA building carpark and drove down directly.

As our car drove through Minden road, we were already reminiscing. The place had been very much developed indeed.

As the sky was still bright, after parking near Blk 9, we decided to stroll around the area before choosing a restaurant for our dinner. I took this opportunity to take pix on every angles of this memory lane.

I remembered the toilet at this blk was located at the front ‘yard’ (not sure if it was the right word to use)  instead
I believed it must had been once the spacous bathrooms for soldiers usage

blk 10 … where we ended up for dinner

It was a funny sight when we started acting like an old folk reminiscing along the way cos the area changed tremendously over the 10 yrs.

After our ‘tour’, we started checking out on some restaurants around. As it started to drizzle, we decided to settle in at the Rakuichi @ Blk 10 due to their reasonable pricings even though it was at such ‘high-end’ location : )

The sky had darken by the time we stepped out from the restaurant. We proceeded to walk down to P.S. Cafe, the once open-aired food centre converted to air-conditioned cafe, we realised that there wasn’t any streetlights at all along the way, which can be quite dangerous as the frequency of the traffic was rather high. Moreover the surroundings area were full of bushes. It is definately not the kind of places to go (esp. alone) at nite if one wasn’t driving.

2007083026s2007083028s2007083035s
advice : if u are taking their cakes as well, u will be given this area where we were. but try not to go in pair, cos they will place both of u at a table in a weird position as shown in the middle pix where the pair was seated side by side instead. there wasn’t any chair infront of them. best will be the one where we were given … it’s beside their glass wall : )

As mentioned earlier, the P.S. Cafe was once an open-aired food centre. The place where the kitchen and the door facing the dessert counter are now was once a long marble-tiled counter, where auntie Helen (that’s wat we called her) occupied the stall on the left selling her yummy bak chor mee and prawn noodle … I missed those : (

The stall on the right was occupied by the owner of the food centre themselves selling drinks and ta-bao-ed nasi lemak, econ bee hoon, and chicken rice. Whenever we had any big meeting, we would always call them for delivery of drinks. But when the cafeteria at now Blk opened then, we had another choice of drinks order. We would frequently occasionally ordered our teabreak stuffs from there too 😛2007083031s

Ok back to the P.S. Cafe, we ordered 2 cakes for sharing. Very yummy … esp the brownie … woo … I was actually trying to take pix with my camera for nite shot, ST was joking telling the waiter that I’m taking pix with the desserts and drinks, but the waiter joining the fun literally helped to placed all of them infront of me so that they could appear in my pix @_@

After reminiscing the whole nite, we finally parted Dempsey Hill around … as the path out was dark and inconvenient, ST drove me out and dropped me directly at the bus stop.

BTW, it was until today that I came to know that the big carpark is actually known as Holland Road fringe car park. All along I thought it was a ‘coach’ park where the durian stall was there for many years. I have yet to try theirs. Maybe one of these days …

Something to add on … there used to be an unoccupied white/black house on the other side of the same slope to the main road. And think mediacorp must have came to know that it will be demolish anyway and so they did a filming there on a telemovie which based on SCDF (cun remember the title of the show). They literally burned this house down in one of their scenes. I remembered I saw Huang Shi Nan at the filming spot : )

Am Honoured!

20070817sI felt very honoured! Many ppl approaches me when they need a listener and adviser. I suddenly feel like a counselor … counselling ppl on all sort of matter but generally on work and relationship.

It’s not that I’m very experience, but for someone who had been thru a ‘tough’ 10 years period, be it work or relationship (not love hor … relationship doesn’t only stop at that), I had managed to come out of those situations and so was able to understand them better.

Stupidly during those years, I had ever wondered how it feel like to step out of the road when a car is approaching (which not only once). But now thinking back, I feel real STUPID. I would have hurt my beloved ones very dearly. **eyes abit wet even when typing this**

Anyway, I had learned to look at a brighter side of things, though there are oso downtime sometimes, but I had ‘brainwashed’ myself that nothing can be worse than those days. “Since I can ‘overcome’ that, why can’t now?” I would think.

Whatever it is, you can chat with me ‘anytime’. Just remember to buy me a drink … or better still give me a BIG treat “P Likewise for myself, will you be a good listener if I need one … huh? :-\

** It’s our neighbour’s National Day tomorrow. May your country be properous and free reduce of crimes … **

Am Honoured!

: ) (u see … the kind of ‘pls buy me’ feel “P)

。。” oops!。。。

Employee Profile

While clearing my ‘document’ directory … I saw this …

Aquarius Employee Profile
=====================

The Aquarius employee can’t tolerate unfairness in the office. (right man!)

Hair brained schemes will get the positive attention they deserve if an Aquarian has anything to do with it. They’ll try to help everyone see the good side of a bad situation if it’s the last thing that they do. (I would be mentally prepared for the worse scenerio, so anything better than that would definately be a bonus “P) They are so smart-they can’t help but hold management in disdain if they feel that they are being unfair and unintelligent. (at times … but knowing it wasn’t a wise idea to do so … sigh …) It isn’t that they are overly ambitious and think they could be doing a better job- just that they think people in power should know better. (ya right!)

Most Aquarius workers are still looking for themselves and will want to try their hand at a variety of jobs in the workplace. (depends …) Whatever they are doing, they will do conscientiously. (yes!)

They usually have strict personal codes that include a strong work ethic. Their bright, off-beat intelligence, and trustworthi-ness will typically gain them many friends-in and out of work. (“P)

Beneath that sometimes odd-ball behavior is solid, concrete thinking and sensitivity to co-workers. Keep your smart Aquarius co-worker happy by giving them plenty of opportunity to learn news kills. (or rather plenty of good food to stuff with 😛 )

Raises are less important to them. (who say! … most importantly it has to be justifiable) No amount of money will make it worth their while to stay in a stagnant position. (that’s depends … promotion means more SHIT work too …) Don’t let them get too bored or they will simply find another job as easily as they found this one-their genius is easy to spot. (that’s what I’m scare of too …)

Birthday Treat @ Din Tai Fung

20070826grp1

We were gathering here for 小妹 and bf’s birthday. But this couple was actually late for almost an hour. Anyway it was their treat and so we went ahead to place orders first. We were already full by the time they FINALLY arrived 😛

20070826grp2

We went to the BB Fair @ Taka right after our teabreak lunch … it was near 3pm then @_@

20070826grp3

2007082645sAfter hanging around there for near an hour, we were ‘tired’ liao and so went to Central Cafe for some drinks, desserts and french toast 😛 (we like to eat ya ^_*)

Their service was rather unsatisfied today though I was here the 3rd or 4th time. They were simply forgetful, somemore the orders were taken by their … “manager” I supposed cos she was the only one in different uniform. We placed altogether 3 separated orders and yet I still have to ask for my 姜汁焞奶 at our 3rd order. BAD BAD … But still I will be there for their nice food though … just had to remind them lor (**sigh**)

We went up to the maternity apparels dept to accompany 大妹 but soon T and I were disappeared among the toys 😛

2007082655s2007082662s
got myself these which I ‘aimed’ for quite some times ^_*

大妹 and T left for the day after their purchase while the rest went ahead to Heeren, pasar malam @ Clementi, before we finally 打道回府. It was almost 8pm then :-O

Birthday Treat @ Din Tai Fung

Xris’ BD Dinner @ CPK

2007082301sWhen 大妹 asked me how was the dinner, I simply replied “Wah! Exciting!”

Yes! It was an ‘exciting’ nite indeed 😛

As CL’s bd fell on the coming sun, 3 of us arranged to meet up earlier to purchase the gifts from Taka.

While searching for suitable gifts at the toy section, NL and AY grabbed a handful of plush toys which were selling at $3 ($3.90?) each instead. **faint**

Soon after we paid for the items, we went down to purchase the ‘eye-ed’ PM’s stuffs … and an ‘extra’ gift.

After all the gifts were nicely wrapped, we met up with CL who was waiting at the Zara @ Liat Tower. We roamed around the boutique while waiting for N and her friend.

2007082303sAs the hour+ of walking made my legs rather tired, plus I was super ‘urgent’, NL and me left for the pre-planned California Pizza Kitchen at Forum while the rest continued their shopping at Zara 😀

As soon as NL and me stepped out from zara, a very strong wind blew by, followed by drizzle. With that we called them immediately to be fast with their purchase and leave before the pour.

人算不如天算, the moment NL and me stepped into the restaurant, the drizzle got bigger and it started to rain, which ended up as a heavy downpour.

It was cold in the restaurant then and so I suggested getting some drinks first while waiting for the rest who were trapped at Zara.

20070823grp12007082311s

We have been waiting for half an hour and had ordered a starter but the rain didn’t seems to get smaller.

2007082312s
Tortilla Spring Rolls ($10.90)
Thai Chicken … served with a Thai peanut sauce
Mediterranean … served with sun-dried tomato marinara
– think I prefered the thai chicken roll one

Those 4 who were still trapped at Zara requested if we could bring brolly to them cos none of them had it with them. But we realised it wouldn’t help much relying only on the one I have, ‘thick skinned’ us approached the one of waiters if he could gather some brollies from his colleagues for temp usage. We were rather disappointed that he couldn’t find any (I actually dun believe that there was not a single brolly in their restaurant, maybe they afraid that we would not return to them which we would of course! So DO remember to bring your own brolly if you ever dine in CPK … nope! I’m not angry :P).

As there was no Giordano at the forum, I suggested buying some from Guardian or Watson. Just as NL stepped out from the restaurant, they called and say they decided to run to the restaurant instead. And so by the time they arrived was 9pm already, which means this heavy downpour had been pouring 45mins and it was still as heavy outside then. And during that 45mins, NL and I had called out to different waiters and waitresses few times for their services “P

2007082313s
Peking Duck Pizza ($19.90)
– sauce a bit salty … somehow it wasn’t as nice as wat I ate years ago

2007082314s
Mango Tandori Pizza ($17.90)
– something like hawaiian pizza where the fruit and the crispiness of the pizza combination made it very refreshing and crunching

2007082315s
Chipotle Chicken Pizza ($17.90)
– not bad

2007082316s
California Shrimp Rolls ($10.90)
– this is nice … very crunching too

2007082317s
Sesame Dumplings ($11.90)
– our hawker wantons taste nicer 😛

2007082318s
Tortilla Spring Rolls ($15.90)
Thai Chicken … served with a Thai peanut sauce
Mediterranean … served with sun-dried tomato marinara
Baja Chicken … served with guacamole
– think I prefered the thai chicken roll one and the sun-dried tomato marinara sauce

After gulping down all the food, we started singing birthday song aloud in the restaurant (ya paisey leh =^_^= so I sung very soft … AY was the loudest :D), followed by our gifts presentation to CL … starting with the ‘EXTRA’ gift “P (secret behind this ladle thingy … shhh … :P)

20070823grp2

It was near 11pm by the time we left the restaurant. Quite an ‘exciting’ nite yo! ^_*

Xris’ BD Dinner @ CPK

Dinner @ IndoChine Waterfront

Today’s dept dinner was arranged because of 2 leavers and 2 welcomers which had nothing to do with replacing each other except for the jap staffs who one was transferred back and one transferred here. (sorry … not trying to confuse u, but do u understand? :P)

Since the dinner would be was paid by company, someone suggested IndoChine Waterfront located @ Asian Civilisation Museum ^_*

basically this is ice cream with GORENG PISANG @_@ … I wanted Indochine’s Temptation but dun have 😦

The total bill (of few x of each dishes, many repeated orders of alcoholic drinks, plus serving of jasmine rice of S$3/pax, …) came up to S$1,542.96, and the person who represented to sign was like “wah!” :-O

Aiya! ‘wet-wet-water’ (湿湿水 – cantonese) to them lah … somemore this was for 13pax leh 😛 We would have 4 separated dinners for 4 different purposes leh … which will cost even more 😛

So where to choose next time? hmm … Lei Garden? *wink wink*

Fireworks Celebrations @ Marina Bay Floating Gallery

20070818002sMy company’s rc subsidised partially for member for the ticket to the Fireworks Carnival at Marina Platform this year. Upon knowing that, I joi-ed some of the gals for the occasion and got ourselves 6 tickets : )

We arranged to meet up at Central Mall for early dinner before we walk all the way to the marina since it will be too packed at all the restaurants around City Hall region.

We were supposed to meet at 4.30pm, and realising I would be late if I were to take bus there, I flagged a cab and reached there 4pm+. Who knows, one by one sms-ed me to inform me that they would be late! Oh! @_@ So having no choice, I roamed around the mall and ended up at my fav toilet … hahaha …

As I came out from the toilet, I saw JT whom I assumed she will be late too cos I assumed she and AG was together, and AG who was meeting up with PL sms-ed me she will be late … messy … anyway it was all miscommunications (which was quite common among us … hehehe …).

Soon the rest seeming to be baga-ed arrived at the same time (hmm …)

Anyway we ended up at Waraku (again) since it seems to be a better choice around there (in term of “价廉物美”).

We got a nicer view table this time round, but because we need a table of 6, they wasn’t able to give us the window seats which only allowed 4 pax.

20070818020sAfter our early meal, we went down to the japanese supermarket at B1 to grab some tibits. ‘Toured’ around the basement before taking the hokkaido ice cream from Azabo Sabo (again). I loved the ice cream from here.

As it was almost 7pm and were told to be seated by 8.30pm, we started walking towards the marina bay passing by riverwalk and padang before reaching to the entrance of the undergound tunnel leding to Esplanade where the crowd began.

Though there were fenced up path for tickets holders, the route towards the entrance of the floating platform was still very packed. It took us almost half an hour to reach there. And by the time we were there was 8.05pm already.

As we predicted that there will be too many people rushing to leave the platform, we remained at our seats for about half an hour and left when the crowd became lesser.

20070818grp3

Reluntantly to leave early for the nite, we headed off (walk again one hor :P) to Liang Seah St for our supper, though my hunger that started from the long walk to the platform had actually subsided as the nite goes “P

Almost all the restaurants and cafes at that street was fully packed, and so without any choice given, we settled down at Causeway Bay Cafe (which CL said bad service and so so food only).

As midnite was getting nearer, we decided to call the day off. NL and PL left on their bus while the rest who were not in time to take the last train home went towards Bugis office tower for cabs but waited in vain for one. Just as we walked over on site of the Parkview Square, JT and I were lucky to grab a cab while CL and EK waited a while for theirs. It had past midnight then @_@

Dempsey … Where My Fond Memories Are

I happened to read an article from a blog which mentioned their trip to House at Dempsey Hill. After reading the part that said the spa is on level 2, this made me wonder was it the building which my first job was at? Level 2? If so, that used to be my office … where my fond memories are.

With this heart-pouncing feel in me, I went in search for any website that mentioned Dempsey Hill … and to my excitement, I found it official website!!!

All fond memories flowed in as I read those the introduction, mentioning only the earliest parts of it history being a former British army barracks and the old CMPB. And yes, while working there 10 yrs ago, whenever we took any cab in, none know of where Dempsey was until we mentioned “the old CMPB”, if not we will have to direct them the way in right from Minden Road or Holland Road, turning here and there to reach the buildings with orange roof. That’s also how I directed new staffs in to Dempsey main administrative office then.

8d2-title

Well, it seems to have emptied for quite some years before MHA (Ministry of Home Affairs) used it for their vendor use, and that’s how I worked there as the 2nd batch employed by them to support their vendors. Some major projects that used up Blk 8D, 8, 9, 9A, 9B and 10.

I will not go deep into what departments and projects were going on then … since they were under MHA’s P&C. I wasn’t even told what organisation I will be working with then until I was brought to the location on my pre-working day by the agent from an established agency (quite horrible right … not knowing where I’m posted to … I did not know where I got my guts on then :P). So that was how ‘secretive’ the place was then.

Anyway, I don’t quite remember about the projects but rather the 1.5yrs I spent there. I remembered one of the managers who bided me farewell on my last day asked me the reason of leaving, and without waiting for my answer, she told me not to mentioned that it was because of change of environment (typical excuse for resigning I guess :P).

Yes, all of us agreed … or rather all the new grads agreed that there is no other better working environment than this place.

For drivers, the parking was absolutely free. For staffs, the working pace was extremely good. Relaxing environment it was, so much so that we considered that as our ‘honeymoon’ environment. A good working life start for me : )

Recreation was the best! We fully utilised the easy-on-hand facilities for our frequent bbq sessions. Free space usage … a big compound just infront of our building. Free pantry for food preparations and storage. We even pull out the office electric fan for starting our fire after much failure attempts 😛

One of our bbq sessions in celebration of someone’s birthday

We even stayed overnight, sleeping on whatever possible ‘beds’ we came out with, microwav-ing the bbq leftovers as our breakfast.

We held most of our celebrations there too. Birthdays, x’mas, farewells … all memorable moments in our life. We organised treasure hunt and get-together party around that area.

It was also the place where I had my first … encounter with cobra. Yes! A real big one and fierce too cos it expanded the skin of the neck into a broad hood :-O. Of course we were all standing on Blk 8D level 2 while watching the pest control handling it.

We had also seen how the old gardener fought with a tiny but strong survival-will bright-green snake. It was then that I know we had to burn the carcass to prevent other snakes around that area to be attracted by the scent from the carcass.

We even saw a 1m+ long dead black cobra as we walked towards the only staff cafeteria located at Blk 9B for our breakfast.

And of course there were some ‘rare’ creatures which we city girls staying in HDB flats could rarely encounter. Big fat millipedes, centipedes, monitor lizard, big spider, so on …

There was one day 2 Dalmatians were strolling with their owners (or maids) near Blk 8. We were then walking out to the main road when one of them almost wanted to bounce on me, if not for a passing by car which blocked it way. The whole thing happened so sudden that I just stood there shocked and cried in the end 😛

As the area were all low buildings, blackout was predictable whenever there was any sight of lightning. So usually during raining days, we tend to save our work frequently. And when blackout came, it would be in total pitch dark in an instant.

We were told to stay at the bus stop if it was pouring when we came for work in the morning. And if the rain persisted, our kind supervisor would drive out to fetch us.

Occasionally we would even reached the office much earlier and jog around the whole of Dempsey, from Blk 8D to along Minden Road and Holland Road, up the slope back to Dempsey. Though all effort wasted after a packet of Yang Chow Fried Rice from People’s Park Complex Hawker Centre.

8d2ls3sAt certain days, we would walk down to Taman Serasi for our favourite Roti John and Nasi Padang. Or walk to the club house for their famous Samy’s Curry. Oh! And if I remember correctly, their fried baby squids at the club house was good.

There was once a few of us went picking the fresh lovesick seeds at the bushes along the slope down to the main road. All of them came back with the seeds as well as mosquito bite marks … except me cos I’m standing by the road only … but all these seeds were actually for me 😛

Sometimes during Sat, when the 5 days work for all government bodies wasn’t implemented yet, there will be car sales going on at a carpark near the club house, that was when you will see more people coming up to Dempsey. As Blk 7 was (not sure if it’s still around) selling antiques and furniture, there were times when you will see tour coaches dropping by. Sometimes we dropped by when we ended our lunch early too.

Those were the days … I’m sure if all of us were to meet up again, there will be more reminisce but I supposed I had pointed out most of them : )

I do not know when did those vendors left the compound but I do remember making a trip back in 1999 when I was near Botanic Garden. The sight wasn’t good. Everyone had moved out. There was no lights around, the road was only lighted up by our headlights. It looked more like a ghostly ‘town’ with wires hanging freely from the ceilings. There was no sign of human being at all (except us of course).

It was until 2 years ago that I read from a newspaper article that they were developing the place into a dining haven.

I remembered one day in 1997, an old British man approached me if he could take photos around the compound as he had fond memories here too. He told us he belonged to the former British army. Whao! How interesting? Will I return there one day and do the same thing “P Up till now I had yet to take a trip down and look at the revamped place …. hmmm ….
